Diversity Sheet
Have your children use water bottles to spray on a sheet. Let them watch as all of the colors run and blend together to make something beautiful. Then talk to your children about how everyone is different but they all blend together in work and play to make the world wonderful!
Different Eggs
I bring in a dozen brown eggs and a dozen white eggs. The children break into pairs, observe the eggs, and then open them up. The message is very clear. While the eggs are different on the outside, they are the same on the inside, just like people. We then cook the eggs for a snack.
Different Presents
Something I do in my classroom is I bring in several different presents, some wrapped very pretty, simple and then just a plain box, inside they all have the same gift; I usually put in stickers. The children look at the boxes we talk about them and then open them. Same message while the presents are all wrapped different, the inside is the same; again like people.
Multicultural Banquet!
Create a Multicultural Banquet! One of Dr. King's greatest achievements was his ability to help Americans appreciate diversity. Celebrate his birthday with an eclectic holiday dinner featuring cuisine from different countries or geographical regions. Serve Puerto Rican rice-and-beans, Boston clam chowder, a Chinese stir-fry, and a peach pie from Dr. King's native Atlanta. The variations on this theme are endless, and the dinner doesn't need to be time-consuming. You can achieve almost the same effect by stopping for takeout from Kentucky Fried Chicken, Taco Bell, and your local pizza parlor (Italian or Greek).
